Forestry Machinery Wood Chipper for Scaling Pellet Plants: Right-Size Chip Supply from 4 to 12 t/h

Pellet Plant Capacity Sizing

The Scaling Pellet Plant Profile and Why Cash Discipline Matters

When a young pellet maker breaks ground on a second plant, the chipping station is the first decision and the easiest one to get wrong. A stationary forestry machinery wood chipper offered in three drive tiers lets a scaling plant match chip supply to actual order volume instead of locking in a single over-sized line.

Why Outsourced Chips and Single-Size European Whole-Lines Do Not Fit

Most small pellet plants in Southeast Asia buy wood chips on the open market during their first year of operation, then move toward in-house chipping once the order book is stable. Open-market chips expose the pellet press to two levers the plant does not control: raw material price spikes during peak biomass season and supply continuity when sawmills cut back. A one-week chip shortage at 5,000 tonnes per month design output idles the whole press line and burns the working capital the plant does not have. European turnkey whole-lines do address chip security — they are engineered for plants two to three times larger and ship with full commissioning, but their quote structures, minimum scope packages, and lead times are built around a 20+ tonne-per-hour design point, not a 4 to 12 tonne-per-hour starter scope. A single 110 kW machine may overshoot the current chip demand and force a payback the plant cannot service; a smaller European whole-line is usually not sold as a smaller whole-line, it is sold as the same whole-line with fewer auxiliaries at a discount that still dwarfs an Asian-built chipper. The result is a binary trap: buy the whole European line now and over-commit, or wait and keep paying the open-market chip premium.

Three Power Tiers on One Drum Frame Match Three Plant Stages

The X-series stationary forestry machinery wood chipper is offered in three drive tiers that map directly to the three stages of a scaling pellet plant: 45 kW for 4 to 5 t/h, 55 kW for 6 to 8 t/h, and 110 kW for 8 to 12 t/h. All three share the same heavy fly knife mounted on a rotating chipping drum, the same fixed counter knife bed, the same hydraulic feed rollers above the rotor, and the same sizing screen underneath the drum. Output is a uniform 30 to 35 millimetre chip that drops directly onto a discharge conveyor and into the downstream hammer mill or drying stage. The drum geometry tolerates irregular feedstock that would jam a disc chipper — branches, slabs, off-cuts, and used formwork with residual nails are all within the design envelope. Because the knife roller assembly, screen mesh, feed inlet size, and welded steel housing are identical across the three tiers, a plant that starts on a 45 kW chipper can later step up the drive and feed system without re-engineering the foundation, the conveyor, or any downstream equipment. The chipper that proves the Prachinburi site in 2027 can grow into a 12 tonne-per-hour machine without being scrapped.

Step-Out Build Path and What the Plant Gets at Each Stage

For a plant like Mr.Biomass Prachinburi the practical build sequence is to start with the 45 or 55 kW drum chipper feeding only the chipping section, run it for one or two quarters to validate local feedstock supply, chip spec against the press, and operator workflow at the new site, then add the dryer and pellet press once the order book is locked. The chipper is the only major equipment that has to be in place on day one, so keeping it modest reduces first-quarter commissioning risk and preserves working capital for the dryer and press. Total capex on a three-tier drum chipper build is materially below the published European whole-line quotes aimed at 20+ tonne-per-hour plants, and the chipper can be re-tasked later for a presswood pallet line, a particleboard chip preparation line, or a biomass fuel plant if the pellet plan changes. Three power tiers, one machine platform, one supplier, and one foundation that does not have to be rebuilt when the order book finally demands the 110 kW step.
