Pallet pool capital cost and sawn timber exposure

Where sawn timber sets a pallet pool's capital cost

A pallet pool or an export pallet maker does not set the price of its next thousand pallets, sawn timber does. When the certified lumber market ran 46 percent and then 102 percent higher across 2021 and 2022, the EPAL pallet moved from roughly 9 EUR to 23 to 29 EUR, and even after the correction every pallet added to a pool stays a lumber purchase. This page follows one way out of that exposure: a molded pallet hydraulic press machine that hot press molds recycled wood waste, sawdust and pallet repair-shop rejects with MDI adhesive into a one-piece pallet, so the intake is a waste stream inside the operator's own yard instead of a sawmill quote. The upstream boundary is stated plainly rather than implied: fibre crushed to about 5 mm, dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture and evenly mixed with MDI adhesive before the press forms anything, on a Y32 three-beam four-column platform from Y-1250 to Y-2500 ton with platens up to 2500 x 1700 mm, in single or double station layout.

Why the feedstock of a molded pallet hydraulic press machine is not sawn timber

The molded pallet is not made from boards, so it does not bid for the certified sawlogs an EPAL unit consumes. Its raw material is recycled wood waste, sawdust, wood shavings, wood fibre and pallet residue, which is exactly the material a pool already pays to have taken away: deck boards pulled at the repair bench, broken blocks, stripped stringers, crates and offcuts from the sorting lane. That is why the sourcing radius for a pool operator can be close to zero, the waste is generated inside the estate rather than hauled in from a sawmill. It is also why the raw material cost behaves differently from a lumber quote, low-grade residue has few competing buyers of the size a pallet line represents, and the material is already counted as a disposal line in the operator's books. The condition attached to that advantage is stated plainly: mixed waste wood only becomes a pallet when the fibre is crushed to about 5 mm, dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture and mixed evenly with MDI adhesive before molding, and those three stages belong to the line, not to the press alone.

The structure and figures that carry a one-piece pallet

The forming platform is a three-beam four-column hydraulic press in the Y32 pattern, with a top beam, a slide and a worktable carried on four solid columns, offered from Y-1250 through Y-1600 and Y-2000 to Y-2500 ton so the tonnage is matched to the pallet size and the density target rather than ordered at the top of the range. Platens run up to 2500 x 1700 mm, which covers the 1219 x 1016 mm and 1200 x 1000 mm footprints most export and warehouse pallet lanes actually use, in single station or double station layout. Molded pallets are formed by hot press molding at 150 to 180 C at a formed density around 900 kg per cubic metre, and the frame ships as container-loadable pieces so a line can be added inside an existing plant instead of as an oversized cargo project. The two photographs with this page are the structural evidence a buyer can check: the double-cylinder press head over its steel platen and mold workstation during installation, and a row of presses with independent control cabinets and yellow-black safety guards on a running pallet floor. The dimensions of the working window, the tonnage step and the station count are confirmed per project against the buyer's own pallet drawing.

What changes once the waste stream feeds the press

The pallet leaving the press is one piece, molded in a single pressing, so there are no nails, no splinters and no joints to work loose under a load, and there is a flat load surface instead of a run of board gaps. Empty units nest at roughly four to one, which cuts the return leg and the empty storage volume a pool pays for between cycles. Because the pallet is a molded wood product rather than solid wood, it lands in the processed wood material category and can be supplied as a fumigation-free export pallet without a heat treatment chamber, a stamp and a segregation lane behind it. The closing loop is the part that touches the capital cost most directly: a worn molded pallet is crushed back to fibre and pressed again, so the repair bench that once consumed labour and bought boards becomes a feedstock intake, and the pallet a pool re-buys from outside is replaced by a pallet it re-forms from its own residue. What that means financially is narrower and more useful than a claim about cheap pallets: the capex line stops tracking the sawn timber index and starts tracking a waste stream the operator already controls. Limits stay where they belong. Destination acceptance of a fumigation-free pallet remains a question for the buyer and the national plant protection organisation, tonnage and tooling are confirmed per project against the pallet drawing, and the press is not sold as a stand-alone machine, since crushing, drying and even MDI mixing decide whether the fibre can be molded at all.

  • feedstock is recycled wood waste, sawdust and pool repair-shop residue rather than certified sawn timber
  • crushing to about 5 mm, drying to 8 to 12 percent moisture and even MDI mixing are stated as the upstream boundary of the line
  • Y32 three-beam four-column platform from Y-1250 to Y-2500 ton with platens up to 2500 x 1700 mm, hot press molding at 150 to 180 C, single or double station
  • destination acceptance of a fumigation-free molded pallet stays a buyer and national plant protection organisation question, and tonnage and tooling are confirmed per project
