Cut-Resistant Gloves Are Not a Pallet Specification: A One-Piece Pressed Wood Pallet That Takes Splinters and Nail Heads Off the Bagging and Drumming Bench

CHEMICAL SITE SAFETY

The Bench Where a Gloved Hand Still Meets the Deck

A chemical site that bags FIBC units and drums liquid product keeps one hazard under the load that no procedure removes. A sawn timber pallet is an assembly of boards and nails, so the deck a gloved hand reaches under carries proud nail heads, lifted board edges and splinters, and that same face runs against bag weave and drum base rings all shift. Ampallet is a pressed wood pallet molded in one piece from recovered wood fibre and an MDI binder on a 1600 ton press, with deck, ribs and support feet as a single body and no nail, staple, board joint or separate foot anywhere on the load face. This page follows the bagging and drumming bench through the failure mode, the structure and model parameters that matter under a one tonne jumbo bag, and the limits we state plainly rather than leave to a sales sheet.

What a Nailed Deck Does Between Two Repairs

A nailed wood pallet is not a surface, it is an assembly: boards, stringers or blocks, and fasteners holding them together. As the timber takes up and gives off moisture, board cups and crowns, and a fastener that was driven flush eighteen months ago now stands proud of the top board by a millimetre or two. Board edges lift at the arris, and a lifted edge under a glove is a splinter. Under a jumbo bag the weave is abraded along the line where it meets the board, and a pinhole in the weave is a moisture path, a caking risk and a rejected bag at the customer site. Under a drum the chime ring is scraped until the coating is broken and bare steel shows at the base ring, which is a corrosion start a Responsible Care audit can read as a packaging defect rather than a paint problem. The repair bench is the second source, not the cure: every re-boarded unit puts new fastener heads and fresh sawn edges back into the same lane. The usual answer is PPE and a procedure note, which manages exposure instead of removing it.

One Piece Instead of a Fastener: the Engineering Control

Ampallet is molded rather than assembled. Recovered wood fibre and plant residue are steam dried from about 148 to 138 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, blended with an MDI binder and pressed at about 220 degrees Celsius and roughly 1400 psi on a 1600 ton servo hydraulic press, so the deck, the reinforcing ribs and the conical support feet leave the mold as one body, with the pallet interior reaching about 105 degrees Celsius and holding above 56 degrees Celsius for at least 30 minutes, and finished moisture at 9 percent or below. There is no fastener to stand proud, no board joint to split along a nail line and no separate foot to work loose, so the contact face is a pressed fiber plane with mold-formed round corners at R25 or R35 and chamfered edges instead of a sawn arris that lifts fibre. The MDI chemistry is moisture curing rather than moisture sensitive, and the binder carries a CARB-NAF no added formaldehyde position, which keeps the same deck usable on a drum, pharma or personal care lane. In the hierarchy of controls this is the top of the list: the hazard is taken off the deck instead of being gloved over. A one-piece body is also replaced rather than re-boarded, so the repair bench that reintroduces metal and splinters goes out of the lane with it.

The Numbers the Deck Has to Hold, and the Limits We State

For a drum and jumbo bag lane the working reference is the 1140 x 1140 x 135 mm nine-leg unit at about 17 plus or minus 1 kg, rated 2500 kg dynamic and 7000 kg static with 96 mm fork entry; a 1200 x 800 x 125 mm nine-leg at 13 to 14 kg carries 2000 kg dynamic and 6000 kg static with 92 mm fork entry, and an 800 x 600 x 125 mm six-leg at about 6 kg carries 1000 kg dynamic and 3500 kg static. Height is held to about plus or minus 2 mm, corner height difference at 3 mm or less, entry is four-way with guide slots, empty units nest at roughly 4 to 1, working range is minus 10 to plus 70 degrees Celsius, and the material sits in the processed wood category that supports a fumigation-free reading under ISPM 15. The limits are stated as plainly. The nestable single-face pallet is not a long-term racking pallet. A one-piece molded body cannot be repaired the way sawn timber is spliced, so impact damage that opens the deck means the whole unit is replaced. Load and nesting are confirmed against the specification sheet for the actual bag count, drum count and stacking height, and removing one mechanical hazard is a reduction in exposure, not a zero-incident claim. What changes at the bench is narrow and verifiable: the bag weave and the drum coating meet a flat, fastener-free molded face, and the near miss column stops being fed from under the load.

  • Scene, old-scheme failure, one-piece structure and model parameters are each tied to the bagging and drumming bench rather than to a generic platform claim.
  • Every quoted figure comes from the Ampallet definition sheet: 1600 ton press, 220 degrees Celsius at about 1400 psi, 9 percent finished moisture, 1140 x 1140 at 2500 kg dynamic and 7000 kg static, 1200 x 800 at 2000 and 6000 kg, 800 x 600 at 1000 and 3500 kg.
  • Both images are drawn from the resolved Ampallet designer gallery and carry index ALT text; neither is labelled as a workshop photograph where it is a studio or site shot of another product format.
  • Limits are stated in the body: no long-term racking on the nestable single-face unit, whole-unit replacement instead of repair, load confirmed per specification, and a fumigation-free reading remains a destination and forwarder question.
