When a Board Mill Rejects the Woodpile: Sizing Sawmill Residue to 5 mm Fiber and Separating Tramp Metal on a Wood Pulverizer Machine

What a Rejection at the Gate Actually Says

A sawmill sells sawn timber, and everything else leaves the yard as one mixed pile: bark, slabs, edgings, trimmings, sawdust, shavings and the occasional whole block. Tipped into a single truck, that pile is not a raw material a board mill, a pellet plant or a bedding buyer can take. Size runs from dust to slab, the outer logs bring dirt, grit and stones in with them, and cut wire or a bracket off the log deck can sit anywhere inside it. This page follows that pile through the stage that decides whether it is accepted or rejected, and through the settings a wood pulverizer machine uses to change the answer.

Why the Old Routes Stay Stuck

The three routes a sawmill usually tries all leave the same gap open. Burning the pile removes the tonnage and the revenue with it, and it is the first thing a permit review looks at. Selling the pile as mixed wood waste moves it out of the yard, but it is priced at the bottom of the wood market because the buyer carries the sorting and the risk. Buying a chipping stage alone does not close it either: a drum wood chipper cuts a first-stage chip of roughly 30 to 35 mm, which is a flaking-stage input rather than the fine furnish a board core or a pellet press runs on. A shredder reduces volume without producing a controlled particle, and manual splitting cannot hold any specification at all across a full shift.

Where the Pulverizer Fits: Screen Sets Size, Separation Sets Purity

The Pulvz wood pulverizer machine is a hammer-type crushing unit with a replaceable high-hardness screen in the discharge path, and that screen is what sets the particle ceiling. F-800, F-1000, F-1200 and F-1500 carry 780 mm to 1480 mm screens on 45 kW, 55 kW, 75 kW and 110 kW drives, with infeed openings from 680 x 380 mm up to 1350 x 450 mm and a nominal 1 to 8 t/h band, so the model is chosen against the residue volume and the block size the yard actually produces. Belt conveyor feeding takes the uneven mixed pile without hand sorting, manganese steel hammer plates and a one-piece manganese steel liner carry the wear from dirty material, and dynamic balancing keeps the rotor steady under a load that changes from dust to slab. For access, a hydraulic open cover lifts for hammer and screen work, which is where screen changes and wear checks are actually done. On purity, the honest position is this: magnetic separation is confirmed per project. A magnetic separator is arranged as a separation stage at the crushing and discharge side rather than printed as a standard line item on every F-series unit, so it has to be written into the project specification and confirmed before it is quoted as included.

What Leaves the Gate After the Screen

With the screen in place and the separation stage confirmed, the same pile that was refused at the gate leaves as a screened fiber stream held at a 5 mm target and finer, flowable enough to be conveyed, dried and fed without a second sorting pass, and with tramp metal taken out before it reaches the buyer or the next machine in the line. That is the change a board mill or pellet buyer is checking for: one size band instead of a spread, and a cleaner stream than the pile the truck arrived with. Three boundaries stay on the record. Nominal tonnage moves with species, moisture, infeed evenness and screen condition, so the 1 to 8 t/h band is a design range rather than a promise on wet bark-heavy material. The 5 mm figure is a target band set by the fitted screen, not a guaranteed result for every species and moisture level. And separation is a project-confirmed stage, not a feature to assume on every unit. For the figures that decide a specific yard, send the residue mix, the block sizes and the target particle band, and the screen and drive tier can be matched to them.

  • Replaceable 780 to 1480 mm screens on F-800 to F-1500 set the particle ceiling
  • 45 kW, 55 kW, 75 kW and 110 kW drives cover a nominal 1 to 8 t/h band
  • Manganese steel hammer plates, one-piece liner and dynamic balancing carry the wear
  • Magnetic separation is confirmed per project, not a standard item on every unit
