South Africa Presswood Plant at 80°C: How One AutoG Robot Replaces Two Take-Out Operators and Holds 24h Output Through Night-Shift Recruitment Volatility

Presswood Plant Operator Shortage

Why the 80°C take-out post is the hardest post to fill on a South African presswood line

On a 1250 to 1600 ton presswood pallet press in South Africa, the take-out post is the hardest post on the roster. Two presses mean two hot-end operators per shift, the night shift carries the gap, and a missing name on the cover list idles a press that cost the line seven figures. AutoG is the automatic pallet take-out robot from EMP that takes the 80°C pallet through vacuum suction and pairs one arm with two presses, so the line holds its 24-hour output through recruitment volatility instead of waiting on it.

What manual take-out actually costs when the night-shift operator does not show

Two presses mean two take-out posts on the labour roster. Each shift needs two operators inside the press safety zone, which means at least four cover names per 24-hour day on a minimum two-press main base. Sickness, family responsibility, safer shifts in other plants and a tightening skilled-labour market mean each of those four cover names is a single point of failure. Add the secondary manual move that follows take-out – lifting the 80°C pallet off the press and stacking it by hand – and the line is now paying for an extra body whose only job is to be at the press when the mould opens. The production accountant sees two pay-cheques per shift. The production manager sees a press idling because the second name on the cover list did not arrive.

How AutoG fits the hot end: one arm, two presses, vacuum suction at 80°C

AutoG is the automatic pallet take-out robot from EMP, built into the presswood pallet production line at the press exit side. The mechanical structure is a six-axis articulated arm with a vacuum suction cup end effector, so the same arm carries the freshly pressed pallet off the press at 80°C and stacks it without a secondary manual lift. One AutoG arm is paired with two 1250 to 1600 ton presses in alternating mode, and the arm rides the press open and close signal that the line PLC already owns, so the take-out station is no longer a separate integration contract. The end effector, the press-side mechanical envelope, and the PLC handshake ship together with the press, which is what makes the press-side robotic cell a plug-and-play cell on day one instead of a third-party integration project.

What the line gets back when AutoG takes the hot end: two heads, 24 hours, clear ROI

The hot-end post count drops from two operators per shift to zero. The line keeps running through the night shift because there is no night-shift take-out post to cover – the arm is on the press open signal, not on a rota. Headcount savings come out at two take-out operators per shift, which is the number any ROI sheet can build on without external assumptions. On the production side, the line stops losing cycles to a missing operator, so the press cycle the line was sold on is the cycle the line runs through all three shifts. On the safety side, the press danger zone is unoccupied from press open to press close, the 80°C pallet is handled by vacuum suction outside the operator reach, and the chronic exposure signals at the MDI hot-press station are removed at the source.

  • 1 AutoG automatic pallet take-out robot serves 2 x 1250 to 1600 ton presses in alternating mode
  • Vacuum suction end effector handles the freshly pressed 80°C pallet directly off the press
  • 24/7 continuous operation on the press open and close signal – no night-shift take-out post to cover
  • 2 take-out operators per shift removed from the press danger zone, clear ROI baseline
