EMP Shred Drum Wood Chipper | 45, 55 or 110 kW | Multi-Plant Serviceability
The Buyer: Four Plants, Four Chipping Stages, One Disclosed Efficiency Number
A fuel supplier under a publicly listed parent runs several plants, and at every plant the first process step is a chipping stage. When those stages are different machines with different knife patterns, a group cannot move a spare knife set between sites and cannot compare output between plants. This page follows one drum wood chipper machine decision across a multi-plant fuel supplier: why a drum type wood chipper at 45 kW, 55 kW or 110 kW, covering 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 8 to 12 tph and roughly 35 mm chips, can be kept serviceable by the plant's own fitters through bolted fly knives and a lifting top feed roller, what EMP supplies as parts and service, and what the group still owns.

What the Old Arrangement Costs: A Stop Only One Fitter Can Close
The cost is not the tonnage of any single machine. It is that no two sites can help each other. A knife set from one yard does not fit the next, so a worn set waits on a purchase order instead of on a shelf. The hydraulic feeding system is adjusted differently at every plant, so chip length drifts between sites and the hammer mill downstream absorbs the difference. When a knife roller needs attention, the work waits for a fitter who knows that specific machine, and the other three plants learn nothing from the stop. On a thin margin fuel route the bill is not the spare part price. It is the days the chipping stage stands still, and the tonnage that has to be bought in or turned away while it does.
Why a Drum Type Wood Chipper Can Carry a Group Standard
A drum type wood chipper is a mechanically simple machine, and that simplicity is what makes it maintainable at plant level. Cutting is done by a knife roller carrying fly knives bolted on with clamps, so a dull set comes off and a spare set goes on at the plant rather than in an outside workshop. The hydraulic feeding system lifts the top feed roller and opens the cover, which is the access path for knife replacement, chipper knife sharpening and knife gap adjustment. The chip screen sits inside the housing: chips that reach size fall through and oversized pieces are cut again, which is how a uniform chip size is held instead of mixed lengths being pushed downstream. The same structure runs at three power tiers, 45 kW, 55 kW and 110 kW, covering 4 to 5 tph, 6 to 8 tph and 8 to 12 tph, so one group can put the same machine family at a small yard and a large one. PLC linkage lets the chipping stage and the mill answer to one control scheme, which reduces manual wood handling without pretending the plant runs unmanned.

Structure and Parameter Evidence, and What the Group Still Owns
The two photographs show the structures this standard rests on: a drum wood chipper machine in line with its inclined discharge conveyor and collected chips, and the knife rotor with bolted fly knives inside a guarded feed chamber. What EMP supplies with the machine is a parts list and the parts themselves: wood chipper blades, drum chipper spare parts including wood chipper bearings and chipper screen replacement items, an operation manual, overseas engineer installation and commissioning, and wood chipper after sales service. Two boundaries belong in the same paragraph. A drum chipper still needs inspection rounds, so this is continuous hydraulic feeding and stable output for a production line, not a machine nobody watches. And the group level spare store is the buyer's to build; EMP provides the list and the supply, not a warehouse at each site. Buyers who also run a waste wood recycling line or a turnkey pallet plant should fix the feed opening and the maximum feed diameter first, then the tonnage.
- Capacity basis stated from EMP data only: X-215 at 45 kW and 4 to 5 t/h, X-216 at 55 kW and 6 to 8 t/h, X-218 at 110 kW and 8 to 12 t/h, chips about 35 mm
- Maintenance path stated from product facts: bolted fly knives, lifting top feed roller and open cover, knife gap adjustment, chip screen held inside the housing
- Supplier scope stated: fly knives, bearings and screens supplied by EMP, operation manual, overseas engineer installation and commissioning, after sales service
- Boundaries kept honest: inspection rounds remain manual, no unmanned claim, group level spare store is the buyer's to build, unpublished parameters not asserted
