Dubai & Gulf · Waste Wood Recycling
Why Dubai and Gulf recyclers are rethinking their chippers
Dubai and Gulf-region recyclers are running into the same squeeze. Skilled machine operators have become harder to keep, blue-collar turnover is high, and the moment one senior technician is sick or on leave, the wood-waste line stops. This piece looks at how a heavy duty wood chipper built around a simple drum structure, field-serviceable fly knives, and a single PLC cabinet lets a recycling yard run a complete upstream line with fewer hands, and how EMP backs it with overseas commissioning and a stocked spares kit.

What typically goes wrong with the conventional set-up
Most Gulf-region plants running a pre-2020 drum chipper or imported hammer-mill line report the same complaints. The fly knife and counter knife gap drifts within a week of sharpening, chip size goes out of spec, and the downstream hammer mill starts choking on oversized pieces. Operators end up babysitting the line instead of feeding it. When a knife edge chips on a hidden nail from demolition timber, the usual fix is to shut the line down for half a shift, fly a fitter in from the local agent, and wait two to four days for a replacement blade to clear customs and reach site. For a small-to-mid recycler in Jebel Ali handling 15 to 25 tonnes of mixed wood waste a day, every one of those lost shifts is real margin gone. The hammer-mill side of the line is even worse. Screen changes, hammer rotation, and bearing replacement require tools and skills the average yard does not keep on the bench. The cumulative result is that low-manning becomes impossible, and any operator sick leave instantly becomes a production stop.
Why a drum structure suits a low-manning yard
The EMP Shred drum wood chipper is built around a deliberately simple mechanical logic. Instead of a multi-shaft rotor or a hammer mill, it uses a single horizontal knife roller with replaceable fly knives indexed against a fixed counter knife inside a heavy-duty welded steel housing. The bearings are external and greasable from outside the housing, the hydraulic feed pack has its own reservoir and gauges, and the operator's only daily task is to keep the in-feed clear and check the screen. The PLC cabinet integrates the chipper, the in-feed conveyor, and the discharge conveyor in one start-stop sequence, so one operator can run the complete upstream line from a single panel. Fly knives are dimensioned to a standard four-bolt pattern; a fresh set can be swapped on site with basic hand tools, no specialist fitter needed, in roughly 20 to 40 minutes. EMP ships each machine with an English-language operation manual, a recommended spares kit covering fly knives, counter knife, screen, and bearings, and an overseas commissioning engineer who runs the first start-up on site.

What the line actually delivers on a Dubai yard
On a typical Dubai installation, one X-216 drum chipper running at 55 kW delivers 6 to 8 tonnes of uniform 30 to 35 mm wood chips per hour from mixed pallets, off-cuts, and pruned branches. A larger X-218 at 110 kW lifts throughput to 8 to 12 t/h for plants feeding a downstream pellet press, particleboard dryer, or boiler. The hydraulic feed accepts logs up to 216 mm diameter on the X-216 and 218 mm on the X-218, and the in-feed reverse function clears most jams without operator intervention. Because the drum is mechanically simple, scheduled maintenance reduces to knife rotation, knife replacement, and bearing grease, items the customer's own maintenance team can handle. Combined with EMP's stocked spare parts (fly knives, counter knives, screens, bearings) and overseas engineer commissioning, a two-operator line that used to need a four-person team becomes realistic, and unscheduled downtime from a chipped blade drops from days to a single shift. For a Gulf-region recycler whose service promise is built on response speed, this is the operational upgrade that actually moves the bottom line.
