The expansion problem: a fuel margin that is thin, and capital that has to be right the first time

A biomass fuel supplier expanding out of a thin trading margin does not need the biggest chipping line on the market, it needs the tonnage it can actually sell, bought in the order it can actually pay for. This page follows one such decision on a wood chipper machine: where outsourcing wood chips leaves raw material cost and supply stability in someone else's hands, why the Shred drum wood chipper platform is built in three power tiers at 45, 55 and 110 kW covering 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 8 to 12 t/h, how a hydraulic feeding system, knife roller, fly knife and chip screen hold a first stage cut near 35 mm, and what the buyer can stage instead of buying everything at once, a standalone drum chipper now and the chipper and hammer mill line later. What EMP does not publish, and what still depends on the buyer's feedstock and credit position, is stated plainly.

Why the Shred drum wood chipper fits: three power tiers, so tonnage is matched instead of maximised

EMP builds the Shred drum wood chipper platform in three power tiers rather than one, and the tier is chosen by the feedstock before the tonnage. The X-215 takes a 400 by 180 mm feed opening and up to 160 mm maximum feed diameter on a 45 kW main motor, rated 4 to 5 t/h. The X-216 takes 540 by 240 mm and up to 200 mm on 55 kW, rated 6 to 8 t/h. The X-218 takes 680 by 310 mm and up to 300 mm on 110 kW, rated 8 to 12 t/h. That structure is the point. A plant expanding out of a thin trading margin buys the drum type wood chipper that matches the log, slab and offcut diameter it can actually buy and the tonnage it can actually sell, instead of buying a single large industrial wood chipper and running it part loaded. A sawmill residue utilization project feeding a pellet plant or a biomass fuel preparation system can start at the tier its own yard justifies and move up a tier later, because the same platform covers the range. Feedstock first, then tonnage, then the tier.

Structure and parameters behind the numbers: hydraulic feed rollers, knife roller, fly knives and chip screen

The hydraulic feeding system carries two feed rollers, and the upper roller floats within a working range so branch wood, slabs and irregular offcuts of different thickness enter without being forced or bouncing. Both rollers are chain and sprocket synchronised, which ties the feed speed to the cut rather than to the operator's hand. The knife roller runs at 590 rpm on X-215 and X-216 and 650 rpm on X-218, with fly knives held by dedicated bolts and clamp blocks so a knife change is a planned maintenance task rather than a workshop improvisation. A chip screen inside the housing lets the finished cut fall through and returns oversized material for a second pass, which is how the platform holds a first stage chip length of about 35 mm. The control side is a 380 V cabinet with soft start, a variable frequency drive for feed speed, and wireless remote start and stop. The two photographs on this page show the handling side of the route, a guarded feed hopper loaded by hydraulic grapple and a chevron belt infeed conveyor with guarded sides and a top mounted gear motor, and the cut geometry itself is set inside the housing, not by the conveyor. What EMP has not published is part of the picture too: machine weight, overall dimensions, blade grade and hardness, and the moisture, density and species basis behind the rated tonnage remain open, so no weight claim and no price comparison is offered here.

The result, and the honest boundary: staged capex, dual-granularity supply, and a cash cycle that may run long

Put in the order a thin margin can carry, the platform does two things. First, one stage buys one outcome. A standalone drum wood chipper fed by branches, slabs, veneer waste and small diameter logs turns low cost or negative cost residue into a first stage chip near 35 mm, and that chip is the raw material the plant was previously buying, so raw material cost stops being a number set by an outside yard and becomes a line item the plant controls. Second, the same platform can be bought as the first half of a chipper and hammer mill line, where the chipper sets the first stage cut and the hammer mill takes it to the second granularity, so one feedstock stream supplies two chip grades and the downstream grinding load is set by a controlled infeed instead of by whatever arrived that morning. On investment, EMP does not publish a price comparison against European lines and none is invented here. The honest statement is that a three tier 45, 55 and 110 kW platform lets a buyer match tonnage rather than overbuy it, and that European full line suppliers serve a larger project scale and do not publish prices publicly. One more boundary matters for a buyer that is currently loss making: flexible commercial terms are available, but they depend on a credit assessment, and the payment and decision cycle on a purchase like this can run long. Plan the tonnage and the payment schedule together, and treat the first stage as the stage to buy first.

  • Three power tiers stated as published: 45 kW, 55 kW and 110 kW covering 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 8 to 12 t/h
  • Feed sizing stated as published: 400 by 180 mm up to 160 mm, 540 by 240 mm up to 200 mm, 680 by 310 mm up to 300 mm
  • First stage chip length about 35 mm, with the final graded window left to the buyer's screening stage and boiler or press specification
  • No price comparison against European lines is claimed, and credit assessment plus a possibly long payment and decision cycle are stated
