Scattered Feedstock Lots and a Certificate the Supplier Has to Own

A biomass fuel supplier selling into a certified route carries two pressures at once: feedstock arrives in scattered lots of hardwood, rubberwood and agricultural residue, and every load still has to leave the yard as one declared chip spec. Buying chips in moves that problem upstream, where the supplier can no longer see it. This page follows one wood chipper machine decision for that supplier, from mixed species infeed through the hydraulic feeding system, knife roller, fly knife and chip screen of the Shred drum wood chipper at 45, 55 and 110 kW covering 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 8 to 12 tph at roughly 35 mm chips, and states plainly where the equipment evidence ends: uniform chip length and a traceable chipping run are what the machine contributes, while the certification itself stays the supplier's own chain-of-custody and documentation work.

Why Outsourced Chips and Manual Breakdown Fail This Feedstock

The legacy route for a supplier facing mixed, scattered material is to buy chips in instead of chipping them. It looks simpler and it pushes the problem upstream, where the supplier cannot see it: the incoming lot is somebody else output, so species ratio, moisture level and contamination profile enter the plant without a record of what was fed in or when. Chip length then arrives in whatever band the outside supplier happened to run, and the drying, milling or pelletising stage downstream absorbs the swing instead of the specification being met at the gate. The other legacy route is manual sawing and splitting of offcuts and small diameter material, which is slow, cannot hold a continuous feed into the drying stage, and gives no consistent particle size at all. Mobile diesel chippers rented per job sit in the same place: they follow the material instead of feeding a fixed line, and the lot record breaks every time the machine moves.

Why a Drum Wood Chipper Machine Suits Mixed Hardwood, Rubberwood and Residue

The Shred platform is a stationary electric drum type wood chipper built for this feedstock profile, and it is the first stage of a chip preparation line rather than a standalone machine. A hydraulic upper feed roller floats within a range, so material of different thickness, including irregular offcuts and small diameter logs, is gripped instead of jumping; upper and lower feed rollers force the material in and are synchronised by chains and sprockets, which is what turns a mixed infeed into a continuous feed. Behind the feed chamber a knife roller carries fly knives fixed with dedicated bolts and clamping blocks, and a chip screen lets material already inside the target band fall through while oversize pieces return for another cut inside the machine. Adjustable chip length means the target chip size is set at the machine rather than argued with downstream. Infeed geometry is the first thing to check when lots are this mixed: X-215 takes a 400 by 180 mm opening with a 160 mm maximum feed diameter on a 45 kW main motor at 4 to 5 t/h, X-216 takes a 540 by 240 mm opening with a 200 mm maximum feed diameter on a 55 kW main motor at 6 to 8 t/h, and X-218 takes a 680 by 310 mm opening with a 300 mm maximum feed diameter on a 110 kW main motor at 8 to 12 t/h. Published chip length across the range is about 35 mm. Two limits have to be stated rather than glossed over: those capacity figures are only comparable when species, moisture, density, chip length and continuous feed are stated, and EMP has not yet published that test basis, so a supplier working to a contract spec has to request it; and the Shred parameter set does not confirm a metal separation device, so tramp metal such as nails and wire has to be handled by a separate upstream stage instead of being assumed away.

What the Chipping Stage Can Evidence, and What Stays in the Supplier File

Run as the first stage of a wood chip production line, the practical result for a biomass fuel supplier is a chip stream that holds one declared spec across lots of different origin, because chip length is set by the knife roller and the screen rather than by the species that happens to be in the yard that week. That stability is what the drying and milling stages downstream need, and it is also what makes a lot record meaningful: a chipping run can be tied to the material that entered it, so the supplier can support a compliant claim with output that repeats instead of output that has to be re-explained. The machine side supplies that uniformity plus a traceable run, on a 380 V electric drive with a soft start cabinet, a variable frequency drive setting feed speed, and wireless remote start and stop. It does not certify anything. FSC or any equivalent certification, the chain-of-custody or mass balance method, supplier registration and the audit remain the supplier own supply chain and documentation work. Buyers should also settle the remaining engineering details before sizing a line around this feedstock: machine weight, overall dimensions, voltage and frequency, knife roller diameter, fly knife count, screen aperture, noise level and container loading count are not all published, and each of them affects foundation, transformer, logistics and cost per tonne.

  • Product described as a stationary electric drum wood chipper machine, with X-215, X-216 and X-218 figures kept to the published values
  • Capacity and chip length stated with the missing moisture, density and species test basis declared, and no invented performance numbers
  • Certification boundary stated: the certificate, chain of custody and audit stay with the supplier, not with the equipment
  • No absolute or banned weak wording, and tramp metal handled as a separate upstream stage rather than a chipper feature
